The Scriveners’ Company Lecture: The Audley Beast

6:30 pm 25 September 2019 The Society of Antiquaries, Burlington House, Piccadilly, Mayfair, London W1J 0BE

David Phillips

An examination of the arms and unique supporters of Thomas Audley, 1st Baron Audley of Walden, that are now used without authority by Magdalene College Cambridge.

Rising from humble origins Thomas Audley became Lord chancellor of England and a Knight of the Garter. He carefully navigated the stormy seas of the Tudor court; skilfully facilitating Henry VIII’s matrimonial difficulties and the dissolution of the monasteries. Along the way he founded Magdalene College Cambridge, acquired a great fortune and some magnificent unique heraldry. Managing to maintain good relations with Henry VIII throughout his career he died peacefully at home in his bed.

Fellowship decorations to be worn.

Chair : Dr Malcolm Golin, Hon. FHS
