Steven Ashley


Steven is Finds Archaeologist for the Norfolk Historic Environment Service. Over the past more than thirty years he has worked on archaeological excavations and surveys in England and abroad, including Turkey, Italy, Gozo (Malta), Egypt and the Holy Land, notably with Martin Biddle on the Tomb of Christ in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Steven is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. He is a committee member and past Chairman of the Norfolk Heraldry Society, a member of the Georgian Group, the Norfolk and Norwich Archaeological Society, the Finds Research Group AD700-1700, and Sigillvm.

Steven was awarded the Diploma of the Heraldry Society in 1999. A monograph based upon his dissertation was published as Medieval Armorial Horse Furniture from Norfolk in 2002. He is the author of numerous notes in scholarly journals including the Coat of Arms, on both archaeological and heraldic matters. His recent papers have touched on a particular interest, the influence of Central Asian and Oriental motifs on the origins of European heraldry. Steven is currently editing a volume for the Harleian Society: At the Roots of Heraldry: Collected papers of John A. Goodall.
